This unique move marks the first instance where the prestigious World Cup will span three continents and include six different host nations. This arrangement raises the intriguing possibility of group matches being held in varying seasons, given the distinct hemispheres of the host countries.

Uruguay holds sentimental value in the World Cup's history, as it was the venue for the inaugural 1930 tournament, which the host nation also won. As part of this centenary celebration, FIFA's President, Gianni Infantino, mentioned that the first match would be staged at Montevideo's Estadio Centenario, echoing the venue of the original 1930 World Cup.

Spain's World Cup hosting rights come just weeks after their former football chief, Luis Rubiales, resigned amidst allegations of misconduct at the Women's World Cup.

"The FIFA Council unanimously agreed that the sole candidacy will be the combined bid of Morocco, Portugal, and Spain, which will host the event in 2030 and qualify automatically from the existing slot allocation," FIFA said in a statement.

"Additionally, having taken into account the historical context of the first-ever FIFA World Cup, the FIFA Council further unanimously agreed to host a unique centenary celebration ceremony in the country's capital, Montevideo... as well as three World Cup matches in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay respectively," it added.

Argentina, the current champions from the 2022 World Cup held in Qatar, have additional reasons to celebrate. The Argentine Football Association (AFA) expressed its excitement, sharing that their national team would play the first match of the 2030 group stage on home soil, amidst their passionate fans.

"In a divided world, FIFA and football are uniting," FIFA president Gianni Infantino said.

"The FIFA Council... unanimously agreed to celebrate the centenary of the FIFA World Cup, whose first edition was played in Uruguay in 1930, in the most appropriate way.

"As a result, a celebration will take place in South America and three South American countries - Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay - will organise one match each of the FIFA World Cup 2030," he added.

Robert Harrison, the President of the Paraguayan Football Association, highlighted that Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay would automatically secure spots in the World Cup. However, he left the future dynamics of the South American qualifiers open-ended.

In conclusion, the 2030 soccer World Cup promises to be a historic event, not only celebrating a century of the tournament but also setting new benchmarks in its global reach and inclusivity. Football fans worldwide have a unique, multi-continental spectacle to look forward to.
