Florian Wirtz makes bold claim on comparisons with Lionel Messi, says 'That's why I liked looking up to him'

Although, many people draw similarities between him, Florian Wirtz and Messi because of their game styles. 

Amid all of this, Writz has dropped a bold take on his comparisons with Lionel Messi. In an interaction with WDR, Wirtz revealed that he idolises Messi from the very beginning of his playing career.  

However, he also expressed his disappointment over his comparisons with Messi, saying that he is not good enough to be worthy of those things and no one can be compared to the Argentine.

"You definitely can't compare me to Messi, because he is on a completely different level. There has never been anyone as good as he is. That's why I liked looking up to him," said Wirtz.

 

 

Xabi Alonso makes comparisons between Messi and Wirtz

In 2023, Former Real Madrid boss, Xabi Alonso, was one of those who drew parallels between Messi and Wirtz during his iconic stint at Bayer Leverkusen as a manager. He believed that both of them has the same qualities in their game style.

"There are good players, and there are players who look good on the pitch. The player who looks good does things that are nice, but not necessarily efficient. Why is Messi so good? Because he knows how and when to play simple passes. Messi says: 'You're in a better position? Here, there you have the ball!' It's not always about making the most brilliant move, but the best and smartest. Florian can do that. That's why he's so good."

 

 

So far, Lionel Messi and Florian Wirtz have never faced each other in a competitive match. The upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup could be the first time they share the field, only if results fall in their favor.
