Union Berlin has named Marie-Louise Eta as interim head coach until the end of the 2025/26 season, making her the first woman to manage a men’s team in the Bundesliga and among the top five European leagues.

The club sacked head coach Steffen Baumgart on Sunday following a 3-1 home defeat to Heidenheim that left Union deep in the relegation battle. Eta, who holds a UEFA Pro Licence, steps up immediately from her role as assistant coach.

Eta previously managed Union’s U19 team, guiding them to an unbeaten league title. She has been part of the club’s coaching staff and is now tasked with steering the team away from the drop zone in the remaining matches of the season.

The decision comes amid mounting pressure on Union Berlin, who are fighting for survival in Germany’s top flight. The appointment marks a historic milestone for women’s coaching in men’s professional football. Union Berlin has not yet announced plans for a permanent successor.

Marie is a former player who played for the Frauen-Bundesliga clubs 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam and Werder Bremen, among other teams. She hung up her boots at the end of the 2017–18 season.
