With the first international break of 2025 fast approaching, Lionel Messi is set to make a return to the Argentina national team after a gap of five-long months. As the White and Blue army prepare to face Brazil and Uruguay in the CONMEBOL 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the squad has been dealt with a major boost.

Lionel Messi's led Argentina handed a major boost ahead of CONMEBOL 2026 World Cup qualifiers

Currently leading the table with 25 points to their name, Argentina face a demanding week with matches against second placed Uruguay and Brazil. The match against Uruguay is on March 22nd and four days later, the defending World Cup champions face Brazil on March 26.

Lionel Scaloni would be hoping that he starts with his best XI as a crucial player makes his way back to action. Argentina will welcome their key player and center-back Cristian Romero for the CONMEBOL 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The Tottenham Hotspur defender recently returned back to action after missing three months of football due to a muscle injury and is fully fit to feature in the CONMEBOL 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Romero suffered a quadriceps muscle tear on December 8 and his recovery timeline was scheduled to be at six weeks. But, setbacks during his rehab period further extended his absence from the field which delayed his comeback. He played 61 minutes against Bournemouth in a match that ended in a 2-2 draw.

Romero's return is beneficial for Argentina as they are missing Manchester United's Lisandro Martinez due to an ACL injury. In place of Martinez, Nicolas Otamendi will start.

Cristian Romero opens up on his recovery struggles

Cristian Romero has been facing injury problems throughout the season but his latest injury was kind of frustrating as his return date was on a repeated basis being getting delayed. After making his long anticipated return, Romero shared a heartfelt message on social media.

After a difficult period full of things that happened along the way, I’m back with the group and happy to be able to help the team, Romero wrote on his X account, expressing his determination to help Tottenham bounce back as well.

Not only this, but he also gave credit to the Argentina's medical staff for their support during his recovery period.

Grateful to the physios of Argentina for getting me through a tough time and putting me back on the pitch where I’m so happy. Thanks to everyone for the constant support, Romero concluded.
