Liverpool's new signing shines in the Community Shield despite a penalty shootout defeat against Crystal Palace.

Hugo Ekitike's agent Karl Mwalako was seen crying after the French striker scored Liverpool's first goal in the Community Shield. The Frenchman produced the first goal of the game in the fourth minute of the game to put Reds ahead against Crystal Palace at Wembley.

Wearing a Liverpool shirt and a cap in the stands, Mwalako could not hold up his tears after his client's debut goal for the Reds. He had worked with Ekitike to secure a transfer from Eintracht Frankfurt this summer.

Hugo Ekitike was picked to lead the new Liverpool frontline in the Community Shield against Crystal Palace with fellow debutant Florian Writz playing in the midfield. The duo was featured in Germany last season, needed just four minutes to find a connection and open the scoresheet for Arne Slot's side.

Liverpool signed Ekitike for a whopping £79 million on a six-year deal earlier this summer after his impressive performance last season. The exit of Darwin Nunez to join Al-Hilal has left the Frenchman as the only recognised striker at the side.

The Premier League champions remain in the market to sign Newcastle United's Alexander Isak, but Ekitike displayed his ability against Palace. He was present on the pitch for 71 minutes before he was replaced with Alexis Mac Allister as Slot tried to rotate the match.

What happened in the game?

The Community Shield itself ended in a thrilling 2-2 draw before Crystal Palace clinched victory in the penalty shootout. Yet, the match’s talking point remained the disrespect shown during the tribute — an incident that overshadowed the sporting spectacle.
