The UEFA Champions League had its final day of the league phase, where 18 teams were playing while the top teams fought to grab a spot in the last eight. The 15-time UCL champions, Real Madrid, were stunned by Benfica with a score of 4-2 as Jose Mourinho’s sideadvanced on a last-gasp goal by its goalkeeper.  

The Los Blancos were third in the 36-team standings; however, despite two goals by Kylian Mbappe, the White lost and fell to ninth, which was one place below advancing directly to the round of 16. On the other hand, Mourinho’s squad advanced to theknockout phase in 24th place only on goal difference and all thanks to their goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin.

Trubin netted in the eighth minute of the stoppage time following a stunning header while the Spanish giants were down to nine men. The opponents were without Raul Asencio and Rodrygo as they were booked with Red cards before Benfica made their historic advancement.

Who is Anatoliy Trubin? 

Anatoliy Trubin is a Benfica goalkeeper who was born on August 1, 2001, in Donetsk, Ukraine. The 24-year-old is a product of Shakhtar Donetsk’s youth academy and was promoted to the first team after five years. 

The Ukrainian has powered Shakhtar win three Ukrainian Premier League titles and a Ukrainian Cup before he was signed by Benfica in 2023. The player has a contract with the Primeira Liga side until 2028.  

Talking about his international career, Trubin has represented Ukraine on several youth levels before he made his debut for the senior side in March 2021, playing at the UEFA Euro 2020 and 2024.
