World Cup winner Rodri’s transfer intensifies as Barcelona joins Real Madrid in race

Manchester City midfielder Rodri is at the centre of a major transfer battle between Spanish rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona, with the final decision resting with the player himself. Real Madrid has been linked with the Premier League player ahead of the FIFA World Cup, while the rivals have now joined the side.

According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, both clubs are prepared to pay a similar fee to City for the Spain international. Real Madrid have been in negotiations with the Premier League side for several weeks and regard the move as a priority. However, the deal remains incomplete, allowing Hansi Flick’s side to position themselves in the race.  

Barcelona have made contact with both Rodri’s representatives and the Sky Blues regarding a possible move. City had held off on finalising any agreement with Madrid, sensing that other clubs could enter the bidding. 

Rodri, who starred for Spain in their recent World Cup triumph and has previously won the Ballon d’Or, is entering the final year of his contract at the Etihad Stadium. He has long been linked with a return to Spain, with Real Madrid viewed as his preferred destination for much of the summer.

The development heightens the traditional rivalry between Spain’s two biggest clubs as the transfer window progresses. Whether Rodri chooses the white of Madrid or the blaugrana of Barcelona or opts to remain in Manchester will become clearer in the coming days.
