In anticipation of the highly-awaited Hangzhou Asian Games, Hockey India unveiled its 39-member core men's probable group for the national coaching camp. This crucial camp, set to commence in Bengaluru on Monday, will be staged at the SAI Centre, spanning from August 21 to September 18. The initiative aims to provide the players an ideal platform to sharpen their expertise and strategies.
The Asian Games itself is slated from September 23 to October 8, with the event taking place in China. The Indian men's squad, fresh from their triumphant feat at the Asian Champions Trophy in Chennai – securing the title for an unprecedented fourth time – will embark on their Asian Games journey facing off against Uzbekistan on September 24.
India finds itself positioned in Pool A, competing alongside formidable teams such as Pakistan, Japan, Bangladesh, Singapore, and Uzbekistan.
India's chief coach, Craig Fulton, shared his optimistic outlook, stating, "Over the past few months, we have shown that we are growing as a team and learning constantly." He emphasized the camp's significance, indicating, "The camp is an important one for us as we are spearheading our preparations for the Hangzhou Asian Games which could be our road to securing a spot for the Paris Olympics 2024."
Reflecting on India's performance in the Hero Asian Champions Trophy Chennai 2023, he said, "We played really good hockey and given the fact that we remained unbeaten in the tournament shows that we are heading in the right direction and we want to keep that going in upcoming tournaments."
Echoing these sentiments, India's captain, Harmanpreet Singh, remarked, "The camp will be an opportunity for us to work in certain areas and to work together as a unit." Singh further highlighted the team's commendable performance in the recent championship, emphasizing the need to "keep the same momentum going."
