In a surprising crossover between the worlds of Formula 1 and cricket, McLaren driver Oscar Piastri penned a heartfelt message of support for Indian cricketer Shubman Gill ahead of the upcoming Bangladesh Test series. The series started on September 19,  Despite their vastly different sporting disciplines, the two young stars have struck up an unlikely friendship, bonding over their shared experiences as rising talents in their respective fields.

 

Piastri's Heartfelt Message

Shubman took to Instagram and shared a photo of his net session in Chennai ahead of the First Test of the two-match Test series against Bangladesh. Piastri commenting on the post wrote "Good luck for the series, mate!"

 

Oscar's love for cricket

This is not the first time that Oscar has had a cricket crossover, In the past he caught the attention of cricket fans as previously he has revealed himself as a Delhi Capitals supporter for the ongoing Indian Premier League 2024 season. The McClaren driver always had a thing for cricket.

 

In an Instagram post, Piastri shared a picture of himself rocking the Delhi Capitals matchday kit with his shirt. The shirt had the number 81 and ‘Piastri’ printed. His post read, “Went with Delhi Capitals as my IPL T20 team – had to go with Ricky Ponting. Thanks for all the suggestions. Will be following along”.

He even competed as a junior cricketer for Brighton Cricket Club and the West Bentleigh Cricket Club in Melbourne. Last year he had visited Australia’s cricket squad in England ahead of their second Test in the Ashes.

Gill's Absence from T20Is

While Gill will be a key part of India's Test squad for the Bangladesh series, he will be notably absent from the team's T20I matches against the same opponents. The BCCI has decided to rest the 25-year-old opener to keep him fresh for the upcoming Test series against New Zealand, which begins just three days after the conclusion of the Bangladesh T20Is.

 

 

Piastri's Baku GP Victory

Meanwhile, Piastri has been making headlines of his own, securing a thrilling victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku. The young Australian driver put in a masterful performance, overtaking pole-sitter Charles Leclerc on lap 20 and then holding off the Ferrari driver's relentless pursuit to take his second career win[ Piastri's victory has put McLaren at the top of the Constructors' Championship standings, a remarkable turnaround for a team that struggled for much of the 2023 season. The win has also cemented Piastri's status as one of the brightest young talents in Formula 1, with many experts predicting a bright future for the 22-year-old.
