Adrian Newey, a renowned Formula 1 designer is set to join Aston Martin in 2025 after he departs from Red Bull. The 65-year-old, who has served as Red Bull's chief technical officer, announced his exit in May following a strained relationship with team principal Christian Horner. Newey agreed to stay with Red Bull until early 2025 to complete his work on the RB17, their first hypercar.

Newey visited Silverstone Factory

Ferrari and Aston Martin both expressed interest in Newey, with the designer visiting Aston Martin’s Silverstone factory in June, according to Sky Sports News. It is reported that Newey will earn $26 million annually at Aston Martin, with his role beginning in March 2025.

At Aston Martin, he will collaborate with two-time world champion Fernando Alonso and is expected to significantly contribute to the design of their 2026 car, which will debut under new technical regulations.

Newey’s specialization

Newey is renowned for his ability to design championship-winning F1 cars amidst regulation changes, a skill he demonstrated most recently with Red Bull in 2022. Over his career, Newey has designed 14 championship-winning cars with Williams, McLaren, and Red Bull.

Currently, Aston Martin is fifth in the Constructors' Championship, trailing Mercedes by 214 points after 16 races. Despite finishing on the podium eight times last season, their best result in 2024 has been Alonso’s fifth place at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Their performance has declined recently, as evidenced by both cars finishing outside the points at the Monza race.

Aston Martin’s commitment to success

Starting in 2026, Aston Martin will be supplied with power units from Honda, aligning with the new technical regulations. Alonso has previously expressed confidence in Aston Martin’s prospects. Aston Martin has been actively investing in their infrastructure, including opening a new factory and acquiring a new wind tunnel.

This indicates their commitment to achieving success in F1. The team also hired Dan Fallows from Red Bull in 2022, who played a crucial role in Sebastian Vettel’s four consecutive titles from 2010 to 2013. Newey’s arrival will reunite him with Fallows.

By joining Aston Martin, Newey will remain in the UK, avoiding the potential relocation to Italy that joining Ferrari would have required. Ted Kravitz from Sky Sports F1 highlighted the appeal of Aston Martin for Newey, noting the substantial investment in the team and the presence of Fallows.

Kravitz mentioned, “You look at the investment already made at Aston Martin and their facilities. Newey will have Dan Fallows, his former colleague, already there. Fallows has expressed enthusiasm about Newey joining the team, seeing it as an opportunity to leverage his expertise.”

Formula 1’s next event is the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, set to take place from September 13-15, and will be broadcast live on Sky Sports F1.
