In a recent announcement by the Grand Prix Drivers' Association (GPDA), Carlos Sainz has officially succeeded the retired four-time Formula 1 World Champion Sebastian Vettel as a director. The trade union for F1 drivers revealed the news on Sunday, highlighting the significant change in leadership.
Carlos Sainz takes over from Vettel
At 30 years old, Spanish racing driver Carlos Sainz now takes on this important responsibility within the GPDA. This move follows his decision to leave Ferrari, where he was replaced by seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton, and his subsequent shift to Williams, marking his fifth Formula 1 team. Sainz has accumulated four Grand Prix victories throughout his ten seasons in the sport, further strengthening his credibility and expertise for this new role.
Sebastian Vettel, the 37-year-old German, retired from Formula 1 at the end of the 2022 season, paving the way for Sainz to fill his shoes as a director.
Carlos Sainz expresses commitment to F1's progress
In a statement shared by the GPDA on Instagram, Sainz expressed his enthusiasm for the sport and his new role.
I am passionate about my sport and think we drivers have a responsibility to do all we can to work with the stakeholders to forward the sport in many aspects, he said. So I'm very happy and proud to do my part by taking on the directors' role in the GPDA.
His words reflect a deep sense of responsibility and commitment to advancing Formula 1, as well as fostering collaboration among all stakeholders in the sport.
Continued leadership at the GPDA
Alongside Sainz, Mercedes driver George Russell remains a prominent member of the GPDA board. Additionally, the legal consultant Anastasia Fowle and former F1 driver Alex Wurz continue to serve as board members. Wurz, who serves as the chairman of the GPDA, shared his excitement about Sainz’s appointment.
We are delighted to welcome Carlos as a GPDA director. He has been an active and engaged member of the GPDA for several years, and we sincerely appreciate his commitment in stepping up to this vital role, Wurz stated.
With Sainz taking on this crucial role, the GPDA is poised for continued growth and evolution, with the drivers at the forefront of shaping the future of Formula 1.
