Lewis Hamilton didn’t hold back in criticizing Ferrari's team strategy during a tense Miami Grand Prix, after finding himself stuck behind teammate Charles Leclerc.
Starting 12th on the grid, Hamilton steadily climbed up the order and eventually closed in on Leclerc after switching to the medium tyres. However, what should have been a straightforward pass quickly turned into a frustrating standoff.
“Burning up my tyres” — Hamilton hints at a switch
The first sign of Hamilton’s discontent came over team radio when he hinted at being let through:
“I’m just burning up my tyres behind him.”
Ferrari, however, had other plans. His race engineer, Riccardo Adami — with whom Hamilton has already had a few tense exchanges this season — responded with strategic restraint:
“We want to keep the DRS to Charles.”
“Not good teamwork” – Hamilton lashes out
Hamilton didn’t appreciate the passive approach. In a clear show of frustration, he snapped back:
“You want me to sit here for the whole race? This is not good teamwork, that's all I'm gonna say.”
Eventually, the order came for Leclerc to let Hamilton through, allowing the seven-time world champion to move into seventh place. But even then, Hamilton wasn’t done making his point. He took a shot at the team's double standards by referencing a previous race:
“In China I got out the way,”
and as the position swap was confirmed, he sarcastically added:
“Have a tea break while you’re at it.”
Leclerc complains of dirty air, Hamilton still unsatisfied
The position swap drew a few concerned words from Leclerc about Hamilton being in dirty air, as the two Ferrari drivers were locked into a tenuous midfield battle for finish points entirely well off the pace of their competitors.
The frustration remained. Unable to close the gap on Andrea Kimi Antonelli in sixth for Mercedes, Ferrari decided to reverse the earlier switch yet again, instructing Hamilton to let Leclerc through for a third time. Hamilton gave a last sarcastic response when it was mentioned that Carlos Sainz, now racing for Williams, was getting close:
"Do you want me to let him past as well?"
Hamilton had come home third in the Saturday sprint race, but come Sunday, the Ferrari boys were fighting more with Williams than the front-runners. Internal tension and strategic indecision were clear signs that the team was struggling not only with pace but with cohesion.
As Ferrari's chances of mounting a championship push continue to bleed away, Hamilton's remarks appear to point to deeper issues in need of urgent repair, both on and off the track.
