The world of motorsport is mourning the loss of Fabrizio Borra, the veteran physiotherapist who stood by Fernando Alonso throughout his illustrious Formula 1 journey. Borra, aged 64, passed away in the Italian city of Forlì on Sunday morning following a courageous year-long battle with cancer, according to Corriere della Sera.

A Familiar Face in the Paddock Since 2001

Borra, born in Brescia, had been a constant presence in the Formula 1 paddock for over two decades. His professional relationship with Fernando Alonso began in 2001 during the Spaniard’s debut season with the Minardi team, and continued throughout the two-time World Champion’s career.

His face became so synonymous with Alonso’s entourage that he was involved in one of F1’s most controversial moments. Borra was reportedly the individual approached by McLaren chief Ron Dennis after Alonso held up teammate Lewis Hamilton during a tense qualifying session at the 2007 Hungarian Grand Prix.

From Schumacher to Dovizioso: A Career Beyond F1

Though best known for his work with Alonso, Borra's impact extended well beyond Formula 1. He previously worked with legendary seven-time World Champion Michael Schumacher, aiding his recovery from a broken leg suffered at the 1999 British Grand Prix.

Outside the world of motorsport, Borra lent his expertise to top athletes across various disciplines. He collaborated with former MotoGP rider Andrea Dovizioso and cycling icon Marco Pantani. His reach even touched the entertainment world, where he helped many leading artists maintain peak physical condition.

Alonso Pays Emotional Tribute to His Longtime Ally

Fernando Alonso shared a heartfelt farewell to his friend and long-serving physio via social media on Sunday.

“I’ll miss you, Fabri. Every day. Thank you for teaching me so much and making me a better person and athlete.

My whole career with you has been the greatest good fortune I could have. Rest in peace, brother. ”

Tributes Pour In From Across Sports and Entertainment

Jovanotti, the renowned Italian singer-songwriter and longtime friend of Borra, also penned an emotional tribute on social media, celebrating the “coach” who had worked with him for nearly three decades.

“This morning at dawn the ‘coach’ left us.
We had been friends and worked together since 1996, and until a few days ago, as long as he was able to stand, he kept me and all his ‘athletes’ on their feet.”

“He was an undisputed leader for physiotherapists and coaches, an innovator who fused different fields of knowledge to create a method tailored to the psychophysical needs of those who sought his help.”

“He helped me overcome obstacles, and we never lost our lightness and confidence.

Head up and move forward, smile, welcome, humanity and study every day—the rest is not for us to decide.”
