India's Parul Chaudhary, the national record holder in women's 3000m steeplechase, saw her Paris Olympic journey come to an end on Sunday, August 4. Despite rigorous training at high altitude in the USA, she finished eighth in her heat race, failing to secure a spot in the final. Chaudhary clocked a season-best time of 9 minutes 23.39 seconds, though this fell short of her national record of 9:15.31 set at the 2023 Budapest World Championships.
Parul Chaudhary's campaign at Paris Olympics comes to an end
Only the top five finishers from each of the three heats advanced to the final of the women's 3000m steeplechase. Defending Olympic champion Peruth Chemutai of Uganda dominated heat one, winning with a time of 9 minutes 10.51 seconds. Close behind were Kenya's Faith Cherotich in second (9:10.57) and Germany's Gesa Felicitas Krause in third (9:10.68).
Parul Chaudhary's Olympic journey concluded with her failure to qualify for the final of the women's 3000m steeplechase. She had also missed out on qualifying for the women's 5000m race along with her compatriot Ankita Dhyani. Having achieved the entry standard of 9:23.00, Parul had directly qualified for the steeplechase, her area of expertise. The last Indian woman to reach the final in this event was Lalita Babar, who finished tenth at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Jeswin Aldrin Fails to Qualify
Meanwhile, Jeswin Aldrin, India's long jump national record holder, was unable to secure a spot in the final of the men's long jump event at the Paris Olympics. His best jump of the day was 7.61 meters, placing him 13th in his qualifying heat. The direct qualification standard for the final was 8.15 meters, which Aldrin failed to achieve.
