An emotional and heartbroken Vinesh Phogat made a shocking announcement on social media about her retirement from wrestling just a day after she was disqualified from the final of the 50 kg freestyle wrestling event at the ongoing edition of the Paris Olympics 2024 due to being 100gm overweighed than the sanctioned weight limit of her category. She was the first Indian women wrestler to qualify for the Olympics final but even the chance to win a silver medal was taken away from her.

 

“Mother, wrestling won against me, I lost, sorry, your dream, my courage is all broken, I don't have any more strength than this now. Goodbye wrestling 2001-2024. I will always be indebted to you all sorry,” wrote Vinesh Phogat in an emotional post from her official ‘X’ account formerly known as Twitter.

Vinesh Phogat appealed against Olympics disqualification with CAS

 

She had appealed against her elimination with CAS (court of Arbitration for sports) after getting disqualified from the Paris Olympics 2024. She demanded for a joint-silver medal.

 

"Vinesh Phogat has appealed against her elimination with CAS (court of Arbitration for sports). She has asked that she be given the silver medal. CAS has asked till tomorrow morning to give its final verdict. If CAS rules on Vinesh’s favour IOC will have to award a joint silver to Vinesh. CAS will reply to Vinesh in the morning (around 11:30am IST) if CAS rules in Vinesh’s favour then she will be awarded a joint silver. CAS verdict will be binding on IOC," told sources close to Sports Tak on Wednesday. 

 

What happened with Vinesh Phogat?

 

Vinesh Phogat was participating in women's 50 kg freestyle wrestling and when her final match was to be played on August 7, early in the morning her weight was found to be 100 grams more than her 50 kg weight limit. Due to this Vinesh was disqualified and her dream of winning a medal was dashed.
