Veteran spinner joins Shane Warne in an elite Australian list.

In a series of historic events, Australia's star spinner Nathan Lyon has created history by becoming only the fifth Aussie bowler and second spinner from the nation to clinch 600 scalps in international cricket.

Big feat for Nathan Lyon

The veteran spinner achieved the milestone during the Mackay Test against Bangladesh on August 23. Having watched from the sidelines as Australia's other bowlers did the damage in the first innings, the off-spinner got the chance when Bangladesh batted again. Lyon made it count by clinching three key wickets for just 25 runs in 11.3 overs, pushing his international tally if 601 scalps.

Interestingly, he joined an exclusive list of Australian bowlers to have taken more than 600 wickets in international cricket. The off-spinner joined Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Mitchell Starc and Brett Lee among Australia's 600-plus wicket takers in the international circuit.

Australian bowlers with most wickets in International cricket:

Bowler Matches Wickets
Shane Warne 339 1,001
Glenn McGrath 376 949
Mitchell Starc 302 771
Brett Lee 322 718
Nathan Lyon 174 601

Nathan established himself as one the best spinners in the longest format of the game, as he became Australia's one of the most prolific bowlers. In Test cricket, Lyon managed to take 571 wickets across 143 Tests while averaging 30.20 with the ball.

Those stats leave the 38-year-old behind just one Australian in the Test format, with Shane Warne claiming the top spot with 708 wickets.

In the white-ball formats, Lyon has endured a difficult time, as he could not become a regular member of the setup throughout his career. The off-spinner claimed 29 wickets from as many ODIs, while his two T20I outings have produced one wicket.
