Indian cyclist David Beckham Elkatohchoongo's hopes for an Asian Games medal were dashed after he was defeated by Kaiya Ota in the men's sprint quarterfinals at the Asian Games on Thursday, September 28.
David was bested by Ota in the sprint quarterfinal heat 2, trailing the Japanese by 2.395 seconds in the first race and by a mere 0.046 seconds in the second race.
Beckham will now vie for positions 5th through 8th in the event. Meanwhile, Niraj Kumar secured seventh place in the men's Omnium Scratch race 1/4, accumulating 24 points.
In the 1/16 final of the women's sprint, Triyasha Paul lagged 0.722 seconds behind her competitor, Mina Sato from Japan. Later in the day, Triyasha will face off against Hyeonseo Hwang of South Korea in the repechage round, offering her another opportunity to progress to the quarterfinals.
Triyasha Paul clinched the 15th spot in the qualifying round to enter the top 16. However, her fellow countrywoman Mayuri Dhanraj Lute narrowly missed the cut, finishing 17th. The last time India secured a medal in cycling was at the inaugural event in New Delhi back in 1951.
