Neeraj Chopra responded emphatically to the conditional mandate set by the Athletics Federation of India, who had provisionally included him in the Commonwealth Games squad with the strict caveat that he achieve the 82.61m qualification benchmark. On June 19 at the Doha Diamond League, he erased any lingering skepticism by unleashing a peak throw of 85.69 meters.

Neeraj Chopra's turbulent start

Marking his highly anticipated return to action following an extended injury layoff since the Tokyo World Championships, Chopra’s campaign got off to a turbulent start when he registered a foul on his opening attempt. The pressure intensified immediately as USA's World Championship bronze medalist Curtis Thompson set an aggressive early pace, commanding the leaderboard with an opening throw of 85.99m.

Chopra quickly regrouped in the second round, firing a resilient 82.77-meter throw that successfully pushed him past the AFI’s required qualification standard. While this effort temporarily placed him in fourth position—just as Grenada’s Anderson Peters snatched the overall lead with a massive 86.38-meter launch—it officially locked in Chopra's eligibility for the upcoming multi-sport event.

Rumesh Pathirage reigns supreme

The Indian talisman found another gear on his third trip to the runway, improving his distance to 85.69 meters and climbing into the third-place spot. However, the dynamics of the competition shifted dramatically in the fourth round when Sri Lanka's sensational prodigy and current world leader, Rumesh Pathirage, unleashed a commanding 88.68-meter throw to claim the top spot, ultimately pushing Chopra down to a highly respectable fourth-place finish. Pathirage has comfortably dominated the international circuit this season, boasting the top three throws globally and standing alone as the only athlete to breach the elusive 90-meter mark with a staggering season-best of 92.62 meters.
