Regarded as one of the greatest professional boxers of all time, Manny Pacquiao has decided to officially hang up his gloves to focus on his political career. The star boxer has already announced his intention to run for president in 2022 country’s election. The Philippines senator announced about his retirement via a 14-minute video posted on his Facebook page and via Twitter, where he wrote, “To the greatest fans and the greatest sport in the world, thank you! Thank you for all the wonderful memories. This is the hardest decision I’ve ever made, but I’m at peace with it. Chase your dreams, work hard, and watch what happens. Good bye boxing.”
The 42-year old in his video said retiring was the “hardest decision” of his life. Pacquiao, who had become the oldest welterweight champion in 2019 at the age of 40 beating Keith Thurman to win the WBA (Super) Welterweight title, added that boxing had given him a chance to fight his way out of poverty and gave him courage to change more lives.
“As I hang up my boxing gloves, I would like to thank the whole world, especially the Filipino people for supporting Manny Pacquiao. Goodbye Boxing. It’s difficult for me to accept that my time as a boxer is over. Today, I am announcing my retirement,” the veteran said.
He won his first major title in 1998 defeating Thailand’s Chatchai Sasakul for the WBC flyweight title. The eight-division World Champion finished his career with 62 wins, eight losses and two draws, where he got 39 wins via knockout and 23 by decision. ‘PacMan’ has 12 world titles under his belt.
