India have created history in ongoing Thomas Cup 2022 as they qualified for the semi-finals for the first time in the history of tournament. In a thrilling clash against Malaysia, India emerged victoriously with a 3-2 win. The Indian team has assured themselves of at least a bronze medal.

The last clash of the quarter-finals was won by HS Prannoy. The star Indian shuttler beat Jun Hao Leong in straight sets by 21-13, 21-8 to make history.

Apart from Prannoy, pair of Chirag Shetty, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Kidambi Srikanth registered wins to knock out the five-time title winners. Shetty and Rankireddy beat Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin by 21-19 21-15 to help India tie the quarter-final before Prannoy finished it off in style. Earlier Srikanth outclassed NG Tze Yong in straight sets by 21-1 21-17.

Earlier Lakshya Sen lost against current world champion Lee Zii Jia after putting up a spirited fight in the first game. Zii Jia beat Sen in straight sets by 23-21, 21-9. Also, Krishna Prasad Garaga and Vishnuvardhan Goud Panjala were beaten by Aaron Chia and Teo Ee Yi by 21-19 21-17.

While India are assured of their first ever medal in new format of Thomas Cup, they have entered the semis after a long gap of 43 years (old format).

Apart from 1979, India entered the semis in 1952 and 1955 as well. However, at that time no medals were won by India in the tournament.

Earlier PV Sindhu and co. crashed out of Thomas Uber Cup quarter-finals with a 0-3 defeat to Thailand. Sindhu lost to Ratchanok Intanon for the seventh time and is currently trailing by 4-7 against the Thai shuttler.
