India's ace paddler failed to meet TTFI's selection criteria

In a major shakeup, India's ace paddler Manika Batra has been excluded from India's squad for the upcoming Asian Games 2026. The Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) left the ace paddler out of the main squad because she did not meet the federation's mandatory selection criteria. Her omission stems directly from her absence from recent domestic tournaments, leaving her without an official TTFI national ranking, which is a strict prerequisite for automatic squad selection.

The high-stakes tournament, which marks the 20th edition of the Asian Games, is scheduled to take place in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4. While Batra missed out on the primary squad, she has not been entirely left out of the continental event, having been named as a reserve player alongside teammate Swastika Ghosh.

Her absence from the main lineup comes as a significant blow to India's medal prospects, given her stellar track record on the international stage. Batra has previously clinched multiple medals at the Commonwealth Games and secured a historic mixed doubles bronze at the 2018 Asian Games. Despite her lack of a domestic ranking, she remains a powerhouse on the global circuit, sitting as India's second-highest-ranked female player at World No. 51, just behind Sreeja Akula, who leads the Indian contingent at World No. 45 in the latest ITTF standings.

TTFI utilises a structured formula that blends both international and national performances to finalize its squads. According to the selection policy drafted in 2023, half of the total selection weightage (50 percent) is determined by a player's national ranking, while world rankings account for 40 percent. The remaining 10 percent is left to the objective discretion of the national selection committee. This rigorous point system will shape the contingent heading to the Asian Games table tennis events, which are scheduled to take place from September 20 to 28.

In the absence of Manika Batra, the women's team will be spearheaded by Sreeja Akula, who anchors a well-balanced squad that effectively blends seasoned experience with emerging talent. Joining her to form a highly competitive unit are Yashaswini Ghorpade, Diya Chitale, Sutirtha Mukherjee, and Syndrela Das. This formidable lineup possesses the depth and skill required to challenge the absolute strongest teams across the continent.

On the men's side, the Indian challenge will be led by the experienced veteran duo of G. Sathiyan and Harmeet Desai. They will be flanked by national stalwarts Manav Vikas Thakkar and Manush Shah, providing a rock-solid core of international experience. Rounding out the five-member squad is promising youngster Payas Jain, who earned his coveted spot on the team following a string of highly impressive performances on both the domestic circuit and the international stage.
