India's Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu has clinched a silver medal in the ongoing World Weightlifting Championships, taking place in Forde, Norway, in the 49kg division.  The 2017 world champion and 2022 silver medallist lifted a total of 199kg, 84kg in the snatch and 115kg in the clean and jerk to win a medal after moving down from the 49kg category.

Chanu had a tough time in the snatch, missing 87kg twice, but found her rhythm again in the clean and jerk, completing all three lifts. The former world record holder in the clean and jerk, Chanu lifted 109kg, 112kg, and 115kg with ease.

The last time she lifted 115kg was at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, where she also won a silver medal.

Ri Song-gum clinched the gold medal

Democratic People's Republic of Korea weightlifter Ri Song-gum was the standout performer in the 48kg division, winning three gold medals, sweeping the 48kg division on the opening day of competition.

On her way to claiming a second consecutive overall world title, Ri lifted 91kg in the snatch, then set a new world record by clean and jerking 122kg. Her combined total of 213kg was also a world record. 

Thanyathon Sukcharoen claimed bronze medal

Thailand's Thanyathon Sukcharoen claimed the bronze medal with a total of 198kg. The competition will continue in Førde, Norway, with the women's 53kg division and men's 60kg weight class events scheduled for Saturday at the 2025 World Weightlifting Championships.

Chanu, who made his comeback after the Paris Olympics 2024, winning the 48kg gold at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in August, carried India's hopes in Norway.

Mirabai Chanu won a gold medal in the 48kg category at the 2017 edition of the World Weightlifting Championships in Anaheim. She also won silver in the 49kg category at the 2022 edition of the competition in Bogota.

Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Lovepreet Singh will lead India's men's contingent at the World Weightlifting Championships.

Lovepreet Singh also won the bronze medal at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships earlier this year, where Ajith Narayana and Ajaya Babu Valluri struck gold

Men: Rishikanta Singh Chanambam (60kg), Muthupandi Raja (65kg), Ajith Narayana (71kg), Ajaya Babu Valluri (79kg), Abhishek Nipane (88kg), Dilbag Singh (94kg), Lovepreet Singh (110kg+).
