The two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu ended a two-year-long title drought by clinching the Syed Modi International 2024 title on Sunday, December 1.
Sindhu ends title drought with Syed Modi International win
India's star shuttler thrashed China's Luo Yu Wu in straight games at 21-14, 21-16 in the Syed Modi International 2024 final. With this win Sindhu registered her third Syed Modi International title. Sindhu dominated the match from the outset, showcasing strong and precise shots that left her opponent struggling to keep up. She comfortably won the first game by a margin of 21-14. While Yu Wu briefly challenged Sindhu in the second game, tying the score at 10-10, the experienced Indian player ultimately asserted her dominance and secured the win. Notably, it was her first title since the Singapore Open in July 2022.
Challenging year for PV Sindhu
The year 2024 has been a challenging year for PV Sindhu. Despite her recent title triumph at the Syed Modi International, this was only her second final appearance in 14 tournaments. Earlier in the year, she faced disappointment at the Paris Olympics, where she was eliminated in the round of 16. Moreover, she fell short in the final of the Malaysia Masters, losing to China's Zhi Yi Wang.
Pair of Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand scripts historic win
India's Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand created history by winning their first Super 300 title at the Syed Modi International 2024. The duo defeated China's Bao Li Jing and Li Qian in the final, securing a 21-18, 21-11 victory in just 40 minutes.
With this Jolly and Gopichand became the first Indian pair to clinch the women's doubles title at the Syed Modi International tournament.
On the other hand, despite the success of the women's doubles pair, India faced setbacks in other categories. The mixed doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto lost to the Thai duo of Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Supissara Paewsampran in a closely contested match. In the men's doubles final, the Indian pair of Pruthvi Krishnamurthy Roy and K. Sai Pratheek were defeated by China's Di Huang and Yang Liu.
Meanwhile, India's badminton star Lakshya Sen was set to face Jia Heng Jason Teh of Singapore in the men's singles final.
