The Badminton Association of India (BAI) has announced the lineups for both the men's and women's teams for the upcoming BWF Thomas and Uber Cup Finals 2024, which will be held from April 27 to May 5 in Chengdu, China.
Thomas Cup squad:
(Singles) HS Prannoy, Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth, Priyanshu Rajawat and Kiran George; (Doubles) Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty, MR Arjun, Dhruv Kapila and Sai Pratheek.
Uber Cup squad:
(Singles) Anmol Kharb, Tanvi Sharma, Ashmita Chaliha and Isharani Baruah; (Doubles) Shruti Mishra, Priya Konjengbam, Simran Singhi and Ritika Thaker.
The Thomas Cup squad comprises a 10-member team featuring five singles players, with Kiran George joining H. S. Prannoy, Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth, and Priyanshu Rajawat.
Sai Pratheek will serve as the backup doubles player for the primary pairs, including the top-ranked duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, and MR Arjun partnered with Dhruv Kapila.
An additional singles player has been included in the lineup to bolster the squad's depth as top players going through a tough Paris Olympic qualification phase in the run-up to the tournament.
“The committee felt we needed to have one additional player in the singles while in doubles they have picked top two pairs and Sai Pratheek is selected as an additional doubles player after consultation with Mathias Boe (Danish doubles coach) just in case somebody is not fully fit or needs recovery,” Sanjay Mishra, the General Secretary of BAI, said.
The Indian men's team scripted history in 2022 in Thailand as the team defeated Indonesia 3-0 in the final and secured their maiden Thomas Cup title.
India has announced a formidable squad for the Thomas Cup. However, PV Sindhu and the top two women’s doubles pairs from the country have been omitted from the Uber Cup squad named by the Badminton Association of India.
“Sindhu opted out as she is coming back from an injury and she wants to give herself enough time to prepare for Paris Games where she will hope to win another medal for the country,” BAI secretary Sanjay Mishra told PTI.
