Legal win turned into an on-mat heartbreak for Vinesh Phogat as the ace wrestler's Asian Games 2026 hopes have been dashed after she suffered a painful defeat in the trials on May 30. Competing in the 53kg event, Vinesh suffered a 4-6 defeat against Meenakshi Goyat in the semifinals, ending her hopes of securing a spot for the upcoming Games.

The entire selection trials at the Indira Gandhi International Stadium proved to be a turbulent affair, forcing Vinesh to battle intense odds both on and off the mat. Her quarter-final bout against Nishu, in particular, erupted into a bitter feud involving coaches and officials from the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).

Initially, Vinesh displayed her trademark experience and class, cruising to an easy 7-1 victory over Jyoti before facing a grueling test against Nishu. In that quarter-final clash, Nishu aggressively opened up a 5-0 lead and came perilously close to pinning Vinesh in the first period, though the veteran wrestler somehow managed to survive.

The bout quickly turned into an emotionally charged drama, with tempers flaring over technical challenges and scoreboard screen failures. Ironically, the resulting technical delays allowed Vinesh to regroup and rediscover her mojo. With the score locked at 6-6, Nishu attempted a crucial takedown but was denied the points by the officials.

Nishu's coach immediately challenged the decision but lost the appeal, allowing a relieved Vinesh to walk away with the victory. Stunned and distraught by the call, a crying Nishu refused to shake hands with either Vinesh or the referee as she stood frozen on the mat.
