Indian para-sport legend Sumit Antil continues to rewrite the history books after breaking the world record for the seventh time in his career. The veteran javelin thrower scripted this mighty milestone on Wednesday (May 27) at the 8th Indian Open Para Athletics Championship, held at the iconic Shree Kanteerava International Stadium in Bengaluru.
Sumit Antil Destroys His Own Javelin World Record
Competing in the F64 category, the 27-year-old shattered his own previous world record, which he had held for three years since achieving a 73.29m throw at the 2023 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou. Antil eclipsed that mark with an incredible, career-best throw of 74.82m during the Bengaluru event.

Antil's dominance in the sport spans nearly a decade, having held the world record continuously since 2019 when he first registered a 61.32m throw at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Italy. He famously broke the record three separate times during a single gold-medal performance at the Tokyo Paralympics in 2021 with throws of 62.88m, 66.08m, and 66.95m, before pushing the line even further later that year with a 68.62m throw at the Indian Open.
Sumit Antil's dominance continues
Building on his incredible momentum since setting his previous world record in Hangzhou, Antil successfully defended his Paralympic crown at the Paris 2024 Games, securing his second consecutive gold medal with a dominant throw of 70.59m. His global supremacy is further highlighted by a spectacular hat-trick of World Championship titles, where he stood on top of the podium for three consecutive years: Paris in 2023, Kobe in 2024, and New Delhi in 2025.
While his latest monumental achievement in Bengaluru marks another historic milestone, the newly set world record remains unofficial for the time being. It is currently dependent on official ratification by World Para Athletics.
Looking ahead, the Indian talisman has already set his sights on his next major objective: defending his continental crown. Antil will be targeting Asian glory at the upcoming Asian Para Games, scheduled to take place in Japan's Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya from October 18th to 24th.
