Scary scenes at NIS Patiala as ceiling collapses during Independence Day event, athletes injured

In a series of unfortunate events, Independence Day celebrations at the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NIS) in Patiala took a scary turn after a section of the false ceiling suddenly collapsed inside the multipurpose-cum-wrestling hall. The venue is used by elite athletes from different disciplines including boxing and weightlifting.

When the incident occurred, the venue was hosting diploma students and athletes from the campus NCOE camp. Several attendees reportedly suffered minor injuries. A video of the dramatic moment shows part of the ceiling crashing down just as a student was gearing to perform on stage, bringing the celebrations to a shocking end.

Who got injured?

As per a latest report by The Indian Express, NIS DDG and Senior Executive Director Vineet Kumar said that main Independence celebrations took outside, while a cultural programme was organised inside the multipurpose-cum-wrestling hall in the morning. He informed that continuous rainfall in the area may have caused water to seep through the roof, potentially weakening the false-ceiling panel before it fell down.

Several students and athletes endued minor injuries and were immediately attended to by the medical team stationed at the campus. Some were also sent for CT scans as a precautionary measure. Kumar confirmed that their medical reports have since been received and everyone is safe.
