Wrestlers vs WFI: DCW wants FIR to be filed against Police officers for not lodging case against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh

In the recent turn of events in the Wrestlers versus Wrestling Federation of India tussle, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has demanded for an FIR to be filed against the Police officers for failing to register a case in the sexual harassment with women wrestlers.

 

DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal has written to the Special Commissioner of Police, Women Safety Delhi Police seeking an FIR to be lodged against the concerned police officers for snubbing female wrestlers' complaint and not registering any case against sidelined WFI Chief Brij Bhushan Singh on the sexual harassment charged by women wrestlers. DCW recommends FIR against Police Officers under Section 166 A Clause C IPC. Swati Maliwal also mentioned in the letter that one of the complainants is a minor and the identities of these women are being revealed which post which they are receiving threatening calls and messages. 

 

“The complainant has informed the Commission that several women wrestlers including a minor have alleged that the President of the Wrestling Federation of India has indulged in the crime of sexual harassment against them. The complainant has informed the Commission that a complaint in this regard was submitted by them at PS Connaught Place on 21.04.2023, however, no action has been taken by Delhi Police on her complaint. The complainant has also intimated the Commission about the threats being received by the survivors and their families after lodging the police complaint,” the letter stated.

 

It added, “Further, they have alleged that instead of an FIR being filed in the matter, some of the complainants and their family members have started getting phone calls inquiring about the identities of the complainants from an JPS officer posted in Department of Sports, MY AS. In this regard, a notice seeking action taken report has already been sent to DCP, New Delhi.” 

 

The complainant had also intimated the Commission about the threats being received by the survivors and their families after lodging the police complaint. The representation received by the Commission was also forwarded to the Delhi Police. However, no action was taken by them.

Now, the Commission has received a fresh complaint from the women wrestlers wherein they have accused two persons, a Dronacharya Awardee coach and General Secretary, Haryana Wrestling Association for allegedly making threatening calls to some of the survivors and their families.

 

The Commission has referred to Sec 166 A Clause (c) which clearly states, that “incase a public servant fails to record any information given to him under sub-section (1) of section 154 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, in relation to cognizable offence punishable under section 326A, section 326B, section 354, section 354B, section 370, section 370A, section 376, section 376A, section 376AB, section 376B, section 376C, section 376D, section 376DA, section 376DB, section 376E or section 509, he/ she shall be punished with rigorous imprisonment for a term which shall not be less than six months but which may extend to two years, and shall also be liable to fine.”
