Vince Russo, a former WWE head writer and longtime critic of the Stamford-based company, has made a major announcement about his future with WWE programming. The 64-year-old wrestling veteran revealed that he plans to stop watching RAW and SmackDown once he turns 65 in January 2025, calling the shows “written for idiots” and vowing to never tune in again after his birthday.
Russo, who currently works as an analyst for platforms like The Brand, Sportskeeda, and Behind The Turnbuckle, has been vocal about his dissatisfaction with WWE’s product. During a recent episode of The Coach & Bro Show, Russo didn’t hold back, stating that he only watches WWE shows because it’s part of his job.
“Every time RAW or SmackDown ends, Coach [Jonathan Coachman], I feel like an absolute idiot for watching that show because it's a show for idiots. It is written for idiots. And I watch it because I get paid. But I have also announced, Coach, I will continue to watch the WWE until my 65th birthday, which is not till January. So, I have 11 months. Once I turn 65, I will never ever watch another WWE show,” Russo said as quoted by Sportskeeda
He also declared that this year’s WrestleMania will be the last “Show of Shows” he watches, emphasizing that he’s leaving money on the table by stepping away from WWE content.
“What that means is I will leave money on the table because I cannot be a 65-year-old man watching a show that is written for five-year-old children. So, you've got 11 months of me telling you how it is. This will be my last WrestleMania and, Coach, I'm done,” Russo added.
Russo Clarifies: He’s Not Retiring
While Russo is stepping away from watching WWE programming, he made it clear that he’s not retiring from his role as an analyst. He expressed his passion for discussing the wrestling business and other topics but reiterated that he won’t subject himself to WWE’s weekly shows anymore.
“I want to make it clear. Never said I was walking away. I will not watch RAW, SmackDown, or any other WWE wrestling show again. I love talking about, Coach, the business of the business. I love discussing headlines, politics, I can talk about that stuff all day long. I cannot sit through a show written for five-year-olds when I'm a 65-year-old man. So, I'm not retiring. That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying I will no longer watch this nonsense on Mondays and Friday nights,” Russo explained.
Russo’s Take on WWE’s Current Landscape
Russo has never shied away from sharing his opinions on WWE’s creative direction. Recently, he weighed in on several topics, including John Cena potentially “selling his soul” to The Rock and rumors of The Final Boss (The Rock) being part of a real-life plot to oust Chief Content Officer Triple H from WWE.
Vince Russo’s announcement marks the end of an era for his involvement with WWE programming. While he’ll no longer watch RAW or SmackDown after January 2025, Russo remains committed to analyzing the wrestling industry and sharing his insights.
