The Day 2 of the Australian Open (AO) brought a string of surprises as former Wimbledon champion and wildcard entrant Andy Murray stormed his way into the second round. Defending US Open champion and second seed Daniil Medvedev, former Wimbledon champion Simona Halep, Nick Kyrgios, Jannik Sinner all advanced to the second round along with Garbine Muguruza, Iga Swiatek, men's fifth seed Andrey Rublev.
Day two also saw wins for ladies sixth seed Anett Kontaveit, former US Open champion and home favourite Sam Stosur, 10th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Marin Cilic. Petra Kvitova, Leylah Fernandez, Angelique Kerber (all seeded) were knocked out in the first round of the Australian Open (AO) in the biggest shocks of the day.
Andy Murray was involved in a marathon contest against 21st seed Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia, it was the three-time major champion who emerged victorious with a scoreline of 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4, a match that lasted about four hours.
Second seed in the men’s department Daniil Medvedev didn’t have too many troubles to book his place in the second round as he got past Henri Laaksonen of Switzerland in straight sets, winning by 6-1, 6-4, 7-6. Andrey Rublev defeated Gianluca Mager of Italy in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 while there were wins for the likes of Anett Kontaveit (6-2, 6-3), Sam Stosur (6-7, 6-3, 6-3), Marin Cilic (6-3, 6-1, 6-2).
Home favourite Nick Kyrgios was also amongst the big winners of the day as he beat Liam Broady of Great Britain 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 at the John Cain Arena.
2018 runners-up and former Wimbledon champion Simona Halep also advanced with 6-4, 6-3 win at the Margaret Court Arena in little more than an hour.
2020 runners-up and former Wimbledon champion Muguruza had a swift run as she outclassed Clara Burel of France in the opening match of Day 2 at the famous Rod Laver Arena by winning 6-3, 6-4.
Poland's Iga Swiatek enjoyed her outing in the second match of the day at the Rod Laver as she cruised past Great Britain's Harriet Dart in less than an hour, bearing her 6-3, 6-0 to book her place in the next round.
The biggest upset of the day sees 2019 runners-up Kvitova and Kerber as they bowed out in the first round. Kvitova lost to Sorana Cirstea of Romania by 6-2, 6-2 to end her journey before it even got going, while 16th seed Kerber lost to Kaia Kanepi of Estonia in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. 23rd seed Leylah Fernandez of Canada also suffered a shock defeat to hometown favourite Maddison Inglis, losing by 6-4, 6-2.
