Carlos Alcaraz has described the surprise end of his collaboration with his longtime coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero. The six-time Grand Slam champion split in December with Ferrero, who coached him since Alcaraz was 15. The player has become a tennis sensation and has risen from teenage prodigy to world No 1 under his coaching.
However, with the first Australian Open just a week away, Alcaraz is attempting to win his first major in Melbourne without Ferrero. The 22-year-old will continue to work with Samuel Lopez. Meanwhile, Alcaraz had described the decision to part ways with Ferrero, who himself is a former world No. 1 and French Open champion.
Carlos Alcaraz speaks out on long-time coach split ahead of Australian Open clash
According to Alcaraz, he and his now-former coach "closed this chapter in mutual". Ahead of his Australian Open clash, the Spaniard explained:
"We, as I said, both are still friends, good relationship. But we just decided like this.”
Alcaraz further said:
"I'm really grateful for the seven years I've been with Juan Carlos. I learned a lot. It is probably thanks to him I'm the player that I am right n`ow."
Alcaraz, who has six majors, has yet to win a Grand Slam in Australia. The Spanish tennis star will try to deny his arch-rival Jannik Sinner’s three-peat. The Italian is a two-time defending champion.
Meanwhile, Alcaraz will begin his bid against Australia's Adam Walton on January 18 for his maiden title in Melbourne. The player has already started practicing while the qualifiers are underway.
