Holder will continue to be considered for West Indies' Test squad.

In a series of shocking events, West Indies' star all-rounder Jason Holder has quietly finished his ODI career. While confirming the news, West Indies head coach Daren Sammy said that Holder will continue to have a significant role in their plans for Test cricket, despite retiring from the fifty-over format of the game.

Jason Holder retired from ODIs

Notably, Holder last appeared in an ODI game for West Indies in July 2023 against Zimbabwe in Harare.

In an interaction with Wisden, Darren Sammy revealed that the star all-rounder will stay in their scheme of things for the longer format of the game but not in ODIs, as he is retired from the fifty-over format. The former Caribbean cricketer revealed that Holder informed about his intention of representing West Indies in Test cricket, but him being a franchise player as well will change things about his availability.

"Yes, Jason is still in the mix for Tests. I know he’s retired from ODI cricket. He (Holder) has spoken about his interest, but obviously, you know, he’s a franchise player as well. So, it’s us talking about, you know, availability, where he fits, but yeah, he’s made it clear that he’s still interested in Test cricket," said Sammy.

Looking at the future, West Indies will aim to get a qualifying spot in the upcoming 2027 ODI World Cup. Notably, the Caribbean side failed to qualify for the 2023 edition which was hosted by India. For those unaware, the upcoming 2027 ODI World Cup will feature an expanded 14-team tournament.

As of now, South Africa and Zimbabwe have already secured the qualification as co-hosts, while the top eight teams in the ICC Men's ODI Rankings by March 2027 cut-off will grab direct entry. The remaining four places will be decided through the ICC Men's ODI World Cup qualifier.
