After a remarkable high earlier this season, Casper Ruud’s road to Wimbledon has taken an uncertain turn. The Norwegian tennis star, who recently clinched the biggest title of his career at the Madrid Open, has now confirmed that a knee injury is threatening his grass-court campaign, leaving fans and analysts questioning whether he’ll be ready in time for the third Grand Slam of the year.
From Madrid glory to physical setback
Ruud’s 2025 season seemed to peak in Spain, where he outclassed a series of top players to win the Madrid Open, earning widespread acclaim. But the transition to clay and grass has not been kind to the 26-year-old. A crushing defeat to Jannik Sinner in Rome — where Ruud managed to win just one game — was followed by an early second-round exit at Roland Garros. During that French Open clash, Casper Ruud required a medical timeout, sparking concerns about his fitness.
Since then, Ruud has been absent from the competitive circuit, with no confirmed matches played following his Paris exit.
Casper Ruud’s Mallorca withdrawal raises Wimbledon doubts
Ruud was initially expected to kick off his grass-court season at the ATP 250 Mallorca Championships, scheduled for June 21–28. However, the Norwegian has officially withdrawn, citing his ongoing knee issue.
“Just a quick update from my side. I am back on court training. The knee is feeling quite a bit better but unfortunately not 100% ready to compete yet,” Ruud said in a video message posted on the tournament’s official X (formerly Twitter) page.
“I am entered for the Mallorca Championships next week, which I unfortunately will have to withdraw from.”
The news is a disappointment for fans and organizers alike, especially given Casper Ruud’s affection for the Spanish venue.
“I will keep training and pushing to be ready for Wimbledon but Mallorca will not be within reach for me, so I am really sorry for all the people there. I love Mallorca and I love going there.
“I hope I can go back another time because I was very excited for it. But I need to listen to the body and I will keep training and hopefully see you back on court soon.”
Wimbledon status still unclear
With the Championships set to begin on July 1, time is running out for Ruud to return to full match fitness. While his commitment to rehab and training offers some hope, the uncertainty around his recovery timeline casts a shadow over his Wimbledon participation.
For a player of Casper Ruud’s calibre — a three-time Grand Slam finalist — missing Wimbledon would be a significant blow in a season that once promised a major breakthrough. For now, the tennis world watches and waits, hoping the Norwegian can stage a timely comeback on the lawns of SW19.
