American standout Coco Gauff delivered a commanding performance at the Dubai Tennis Championships, but it was her candid reflection on the crowd that drew equal attention after her semifinal-clinching win.
Clinical win over Alexandra Eala
Facing fan favorite Alexandra Eala for the first time in her career, Gauff dominated proceedings from the outset. The American stormed to a 6-0, 6-2 victory, conceding just one break of serve and wrapping up the contest in one hour and seven minutes.
Eala’s growing popularity on the WTA Tour was evident throughout the tournament, with the Filipina receiving strong backing from the stands. However, Gauff managed to silence the crowd with her precision and composure, dictating rallies and limiting unforced errors.
Gauff reflects on the crowd’s reaction
Despite the one-sided scoreline, the atmosphere inside the stadium remained a talking point. Speaking in her post-match press conference, Coco Gauff revealed that the Dubai spectators were more restrained compared to other occasions where she has faced partisan environments.
“Honestly, I feel like they were a bit nicer to me today than maybe other players.
“I don’t know if it’s because we played doubles before or maybe because of the scoreline.
“I think in the previous matches I saw they were more cheering in between serves. I don’t know. They didn’t do that much today.
“I’ll take it. I appreciate the silent support. I think that was the difference (smiling).”
The 21-year-old suggested that previous experiences in hostile settings helped her remain unfazed.
“No, I think when I played [Lois] Boisson at [the] French Open, I think that prepped me. Then, Jasmine [Paolini] in Rome, I think, was the worst I’ve experienced with the crowd. So I’ve had those experiences. I think it helped me today.”
Experience paying off on the big stage
Coco Gauff’s remarks highlight her growing maturity on tour. Having previously navigated intense atmospheres at the French Open and in Rome, she appeared composed despite the overwhelming support for her opponent in Dubai.
With a semifinal berth secured, Gauff’s focus now shifts firmly to the title. If her latest display is any indication, neither the scoreboard nor the crowd will stand in her way.
