Daniil Medvedev left the court in frustration after defeat against Alexei Popyrin at the 2025 Canadian Open.

The Canadian Open game saw defending champion Popyrin defeating Medvedev in Toronto.

Daniil Medvedev left the court at the Canadian Open in Toronto without taking his bag after suffering defeat against defending champion Alexei Popyrin. The Russian won the first set, but made a solid comeback to keep his hopes alive.

On Thursday, July 31, two former Canadian open champions locked horns against each other in Toronto to seal a  spot in the fourth round of the 2025 edition. Medvedev, who won the 2021 edition, started strong by winning the first set by 7-5. But, the 2024 winner, Popyrin made a comeback to clinch the next two sets 6-4,6-4 and advance.

After the match ended, Medvedev was seen leaving the court in frustration, without collecting his bag. Generally, both players pack up their gear before exiting, but Medvedev was too upset to care, leaving his bag as he rushed straight to the locker room.

Daniil Medvedev's 2025 has not gone great so far with a win-loss record of 25-15. He has faced several early exits, including a first-round loss at Wimbledon. He managed to reach only one final this season but could not convert it into a title.

The Russian started the year at World No.5 but has dropped to World No.14. Frustration in his game can be seen clearly  multiple times this season.

On the other hand, Popyrin is also facing similar circumstances. This season, he holds a 12-16 record and has not been able to register four consecutive victories in 2025. As the defending champion in Toronto, the 18th seeded Aussie has registered victories against Nicolas Arseneault and Medvedev on his way to the fourth round.

Popyrin opens up on his victory against Daniil Medvedev at the Canadian Open

Sharing his thoughts on his hard earned victory against Daniil Medvedev, Alexei Popyrin noted that he lost control of the game despite a great start for a brief moment.

"I felt like I should have won that first set," he said (via ATPTour.com). "I was in the driver's seat, I felt like I was really comfortable out there, and then something happened - the same thing that happened earlier this season when I played him [in Rome]. I kind of let go and I started feeling my shots a little bit. When that happens, when you play a fast pace against him, he starts feeling the ball a little bit more."

Popyrin said that once Medvedev found his rhythm, he had to shift back to his original plan. He tried to serve big, attacking the net, and breaking the Russian's rhythm.

Popyrin will lock horns against the fifth seed Holger Rune, This will be their second face-off on tour with Rune winning  the first 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in Rome in 2023.
