In an impressive display of skill and tenacity, India's Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden successfully secured their position in the round of 16 at the US Open 2023 men's doubles event. Held at the iconic Flushing Meadows in New York, the duo of Bopanna and Ebden, seeded sixth in the tournament, defeated the unseeded team of Roman Safiullin from Russia and Andrey Golubev from Kazakhstan.

The Indo-Australian pair faced some early adversity, particularly in the first set where they struggled with their serves and were even beaten on love in the second game. Safiullin and Golubev upped the ante in the second set, delivering more aces and reducing their unforced errors. Nonetheless, their efforts failed to break Bopanna and Ebden, who utilized their seasoned expertise to secure back-to-back breaks in the seventh and ninth games, thereby clinching the match in straight sets.
Looking ahead, Bopanna and Ebden are slated to go head-to-head with the British pair of Julian Cash and Henry Patten in the round of 16, scheduled for Sunday. Additionally, Bopanna will also be seen in action in the mixed doubles segment of the hard court event. For this category, he has partnered with Indonesia's Aldila Sutjiadi, with the duo already winning their opening match on Friday.
At 43, Rohan Bopanna stands as India's lone remaining representative in the US Open 2023, following the early exit of other Indian players like Saketh Myneni and Yuki Bhambri in the men's doubles. Indian singles players, including Ankita Raina and Sumit Nagal, also failed to get past the qualifiers.
