WWE icon John Cena who is all set to retire later this year has revealed suffering a major disease- skin cancer due to excessive heat. During a candid conversation with People, the 16-time World Champion admitted that he had been diagnosed with skin cancer after a routine visit to the dermatologist revealed a cancerous spot on his chest.
“Man, that phone call’s not what you want to get because it is unpredictable, and you don’t know how bad it’s going to be,” Cena shared.
Though the initial removal was successful, it didn’t end there.
Multiple Surgeries and Lingering Worries
Cena revealed that after that first scare, he returned to the doctor a year later and discovered yet another spot—this time near his right shoulder.
“A year later, I went back and had another spot removed close to my right shoulder. It shows up like a white polka dot on the side of my chest and on my shoulder… If you watch WWE, you’ll be able to see them,” he explained.
The wrestling veteran admitted that his failure to use sunscreen consistently over the years may have contributed to the condition. Growing up in Massachusetts and later living in sunny Florida, Cena said protecting his skin was something he often neglected—something he now deeply regrets.
A Message from One Human to Another
More than just statistics or warnings, Cena believes it’s the human connection that truly drives a message home.
“The stats on this are overwhelming, but as much as I learn about them, those numbers don't mean anything. I think the best way to hammer home a point is human-to-human connection. And I as a human can tell you: Man, that phone call's not what you want to get because it is unpredictable and you don't know how bad it's going to be,” Cena said.
He continued, emphasizing how this health scare has changed his mindset: “I’m in a great space in my life where [protecting myself] is what’s now important to me. And I’m so grateful to be able to dodge those two bullets, but I wear them as a reminder of, ‘Hey man, you need to take the extra few seconds to protect yourself every day.’”
Preparing for One Final WWE Showdown
Despite the health challenges, Cena is still pushing forward in the ring. After making a surprising return to WWE earlier this year—and turning heel in the process—Cena is now preparing for what could be his final match.
On April 21, he’s scheduled to face Cody Rhodes for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania, potentially marking the end of a legendary wrestling career.
