Stuart Broad criticised Brendon McCullum over England's Ashes defeat

Australia defeated England by 4-1 in The Ashes

Former England cricketer Stuart Broad believes that serious conversations need to be held when it comes to head coach Brendon McCullum. The side's Test results have severely depleted under his guidance in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. They have recorded six defeats in 10 games so far and currently sit seventh on the standings.

Broad feels that the CEO of England Cricket, Richard Gould should have an honest conversation with McCullum and if he doesn't agree with the latter's methods, then he should tell him that the team won't be able to move forward under him.

"As for the coach, Brendon McCullum, if I was CEO of English cricket - which I have no interest in being - I would invite him in, probably with a glass of wine, and say, 'Baz, tell me how you see it going forward? What are your different styles of play and what personnel would you like involved?'" Broad told Sky Sports.

"If they really didn't sit with how I believe the team should move forward, then there is no way of going forward. I would lay it on McCullum first, rather than say 'I want to see this' as I want to hear from him and what the adaptation will be," he added.

Broad on his time under McCullum

Broad also recalled the short time that he spent under McCullum in England's Test team and observed that the latter didn't pop off on younger players, who found it harder to implement things on the field in comparison to experienced players.

"When Baz came in, he had Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Jimmy Anderson, myself, to bed messages in. Players experienced enough to say 'I know what I am doing and can move it forward'. When you are giving those messages to younger players who don't know their game as well and are still finding their feet, then maybe things are harder to implement," Broad stated.

"I didn't see McCullum tearing strips off players but I only had a short 18 months under him where he didn't necessarily need to as we had some brilliant results. I don't think that is his natural nature but that doesn't mean a batting coach can't go in and say, 'what's the game plan here?'" he further added.

Australia win the Ashes in comprehensive fashion

Meanwhile, Australia defeated England by 5 wickets in the penultimate Test of the Ashes series held at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Ben Stokes & Co. once again came up on the losing side as the Aussies asserted their dominance and retained the Ashes once again. Though England did manage to end a 15-year drought for a Test win Down Under, their performance throughout the series was anything but impressive.
