Kuldeep Yadav had a tough day at the office in Dharamsala. He was taken to the cleaners by Daryl Mitchell in the middle overs. Mitchell countered Kuldeep by dancing down the track and tried the sweep and reverse-sweep shots as well. Frustrated with Mitchell's tactics, Kuldeep decided to increase the pace and the result left Mitchell dumbfounded.
The incident took place in the 33rd over of the innings. The left-arm chinaman had already conceded 48 runs from the five overs he bowled. Mitchell got on the strike on the fourth ball of the over. Mitchell decided to go for a reverse sweep to beat the fielder behind square inside the 30-yard circle.
The Kiwi batter was beaten by the pace as Kuldeep bowled a seam-up delivery. The ball missed the bat and hit Mitchell on the arm. The ball surprised Indian skipper Rohit Sharma as well who had his hands on his knees and was laughing. Kuldeep also had a wry smile on his face.
The delivery managed to rattle Mitchell. On the next ball, Kuldeep pitched it wide and full. Mitchell took the bait and went for a lofted shot. The plan almost worked by Jasprit Bumrah dropped an easy catch to give Mitchell a second chance. It added to the list of dropped catches by Indian fielders.
Mitchell went on to score his fifth hundred in ODIs. He became the second-fastest after Devon Conway to reach five ODI hundreds for New Zealand. He took just 30 innings. He also became the fourth batter at no.4 position or below to score a hundred against India in World Cups.
While Mitchell’s wicket eluded Kuldeep, he did manage to dismiss New Zealand captain Tom Latham. In the 37th over of the innings, Latham went for a flick shot and was beaten for pace. The ball hit him on the pads. He opted for the review as well but the decision was not reversed. In his last over, Kuldeep got the wicket of Glenn Phillips as well. He finished his quota of 10 overs with two wickets and 73 runs.
