Women's ODI World Cup rewind: Only 3 winners, 2 final heartbreaks for India and Australia's unmatched domination

ICC Women's ODI World Cup 2025 is just around the corner. India and Sri Lanka are co-hosts of the tournament and will take on each other on September 30 at Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati to kickstart the sporting extravaganza. Harmanpreet Kaur-led India will be searching for their first-ever World Cup Trophy. Less than a week ahead of the tournament opener, here is a look at the Women’s ODI World Cup winners over the years. 

Only three World Cup winners

So far, there have been 11 Women's ODI World Cups. Australia have won seven times, England have three title wins whereas New Zealand won one in the 21st century.

Women ODI World Cups in the 20th century

In the inaugural women's ODI World Cup in 1973, India did not participate. In England, the hosts beat Australia in the final by 92 runs to win the trophy.

In the 1997-78 Women's ODI World Cup, India, Australia, England and New Zealand participate. Australia beat England by eight wickets in the final to win the trophy.

In the 1982 Women's ODI World Cup, International XI was added to the roster. Australia beat England by three wickets in a low-scoring encounter. 

In the 1988-89 Women's ODI World Cup, India did not participate. Netherlands and Ireland were part of the tournament. In the final, Australia beat England by eight wickets in a comprehensive manner to register a hat-trick of World Cup final wins.

In the 1993 Women's ODI World Cup, India finished in top four. In the final at Lord's, England beat New Zealand by 67 runs to win the trophy for the second time.

India suffer narrow defeat in semifinal

In the 1997 Women's ODI World Cup 2025, the Pramila Bhatt-led India reached the semifinal where they lost to Australia by 19 runs. In the final, Australia beat New Zealand by five wickets to win the trophy for the fourth time.

White Ferns script history 

In the 2000 Women's ODI World Cup, Anju Jain-led India reached the semifinal where they were outclassed by New Zealand, suffering a nine-wicket defeat. In the final, the White Ferns beat Australia by four runs in a thrilling game to win the trophy for the first time.

India reach final but outclassed by Aussies

In the 2005 Women's ODI World Cup, India reached the final for the first time. Mithali Raj-led met the mighty Australians in the final who beat them by 98 runs to win the title once again.

England win the title again

In the Women's ODI World Cup 2009, India did not make it to the final but beat hosts Australia by three wickets as per DL method in the third-place playoff match. In the final, England beat New Zealand by four wickets to win the trophy for the first time since 1993.

Australia dominate again

In the 2013 Women's ODI World Cup, India did not make it past the group stage. West Indies made it to the final this time but were outplayed by Australia. They lost the final by a huge margin of 114 runs. 

India’s heartbreak in England

In the 2017 Women's ODI World Cup, India made it to the final. Harmanpreet Kaur starred with 171-run knock in the semifinal against Australia. In the final, India were well-poised in the run chase but crumbled under pressure. Mithali Raj-led India suffered a heartbreaking nine-run defeat in the final.

Australia win for 7th time

In the previous edition of Women's ODI World Cup, India missed out on a semifinal spot. Australia reached the final against England once again. Alyssa Healy starred with a 170-run knock as Australia posted 356/5 on the board and beat the English by 71 runs.
