Stephen Fleming highlights the importance of temperament over talent while backing Kartik Sharma’s rise.

Kartik’s unbeaten 54 and Ruturaj Gaikwad’s 67* seal a comfortable chase for CSK against MI.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) secured a comfortable win over Mumbai Indians (MI) by seven wickets while chasing 160 runs on Saturday, May 2 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Youngster Kartik Sharma played a key role in the victory by hitting his maiden half-century in the tournament.

Speaking at the post-game press conference, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming noted that introducing young talents at a stage like IPL is very tough as it requires a great level of temperament more than skill. Citing Kartik Sharma's example, Fleming admitted that his introduction was a little tough, but the 20-year-old batter worked hard on certain areas and had a great outing against a solid team like MI.

"You have the young players, so there are two parts to it. One is how you introduce them. It is a big stage, no matter what they’ve been doing at the domestic level. So understanding their mentality is really important, and it is a big step up. They can have all the talent in the world, but the temperament is what we’re looking for. And his introduction was tough at the start, and then he had a little bit of time out where he worked hard, and today was a good reward for that.

Opening up on Kartik's potential, Fleming claimed that he is a fine player and this is why he was expensive in the auction, as other teams identified his ability. The CSK head coach praised the right-handed batter's temperament and claimed that he will get better after this game .

“He’s a fine player, and he was expensive in the auction because others see that as well. And tonight it was good to see the temperament as well as the skill on show, and he will just get better and better. So it’s a nice spot for him, and the timing was right. So we’re really pleased and proud of what he did today," Fleming added.

Kartik Sharma's match-winning knock

After Urvil Patel's dismissal, Kartik Sharma was promoted in the batting order ahead of Shivam Dube and Dewald Brevis and he repaid the trust shown in him. The 20-year-old batter stitched a match-winning partnership with skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad to bag crucial two points in the tournament.

Kartik finished the game with unbeaten 54 runs off 40 deliveries, at a strike rate of 135.00 with the help of four boundaries and three sixes. Meanwhile, Ruturaj also looked in sublime touch as he struck second consecutive half-century in the tournament, wrapping up the game with 67 not out off 48 balls at a strike rate of 139.58, his innings included five fours and two sixes.

The Yellow Army would have a big boost in confidence after securing a second win over MI this season. It would be interesting to see if they can continue their good form in the upcoming games.
