The Wankhede Stadium is set to host a high-stakes clash on April 23 as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) face off against Mumbai Indians (MI). Both the sides, who have won the IPL titles five times, are currently find themselves at the bottom of the points table. As a result, the match has become a pivotal for both teams, as they look to secure a crucial win and climb the standings.
Spencer Johnson to feature in MI vs CSK clash
Meanwhile amidst CSK's injury woes, their bowling coach Eric Simmons has confirmed that Australian pacer Spencer Johnson will be in team's playing for the clash against MI.
“Khaleel Ahmed & Anshul Kamboj have been really good for us. Spencer Johnson (Khaleel's replacement), will be in our starting XI tomorrow night,” CSK's bowling coach said at the pre-match press conference.

This adjustment follows the injury of Khaleel Ahmed, who was forced to leave the field mid-spell against the Kolkata Knight Riders and has been unable to continue, prompting the franchise to call upon the Australian quick as his replacement.
Khaleel Ahmed's hapless injury
Khaleel featured in all of CSK's first five matches of the ongoing season. However, he struggled to find his rhythm during this stretch, managing to claim only two wickets while carrying a high bowling average of 73 and an economy rate of 8.67.
His campaign was ultimately cut short during last week's match against the Kolkata Knight Riders in Chennai. Although he finished with respectable figures of 1-24 in 3.5 overs, Ahmed was forced to leave the field just one ball short of completing his full quota. Shortly thereafter, it was confirmed that he had sustained a Grade 2 quadriceps tear, an injury that has officially ruled him out for the remainder of the tournament.
To address the vacancy in their bowling attack, CSK have brought in Australian speedster Spencer Johnson. Johnson departed the Pakistan Super League (PSL), where he was representing the Quetta Gladiators, to join the Yellow Brigade as a replacement for the previously injured Nathan Ellis. The pacer brings valuable experience to the side, having played nine IPL matches throughout his career, including four appearances for the Kolkata Knight Riders during the 2025 edition of the tournament.

CSK, MI meet same fortune
Meanwhile, CSK’s campaign has been hampered by a persistent string of injuries, disrupting their rhythm throughout the season. They are eager to bounce back following a recent loss to the Sunrisers Hyderabad, which halted their momentum. Chennai’s tournament began with three consecutive defeats against the Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, but they managed to stabilize briefly with wins over the Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders before their recent setback.
Meanwhile, MI have faced a similarly challenging path. They opened their campaign with a victory over the Kolkata Knight Riders but subsequently endured a difficult stretch with four straight losses to the Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Punjab Kings. However, there are signs that the team is turning a corner, as they head into this match coming off a morale-boosting win against Gujarat Titans.
