Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are set to rope in former India pacer Mohit Sharma as their bowling coach, replacing Eric Simmons. Mohit is expected to be the first pick since Zaheer Khan took over as head coach following Stephen Fleming's exit.
As per a report by TOI, discussions are underway between the franchise and the former pacer who has never won an Indian Premier League (IPL) title as a player.
"Mohit will join CSK as our new bowling coach. His name was recommended by our head coach Zaheer Khan. Mohit was tremendous with us as a player as well and we hope he will do a great job as bowling coach," CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan told the English daily.
"The next set of coaching staffs will also be recruited on Zaheer's recommendation in the coming weeks," he added.
Mohit’s IPL career
Mohit had made his IPL debut for CSK in 2013. In 2014 edition, he won the purple cap in CSK colours with 23 wickets in the season. After three seasons at CSK, he was roped in by Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) for three seasons. In 2019, he returned to CSK and played just one game. In IPL 2020, he joined Delhi Capitals (DC) and played just one game there as well.
In IPL 2023, he reinvented himself and bagged 27 wickets for Gujarat Titans (GT) who lost to CSK in the final. He bowled the last over where Ravindra Jadeja got the better of him in the run chase. He played one more season for GT before moving to DC where he could bag just a couple of wickets from eight appearances. In the same year, he retired from all forms of cricket.
Overall, Mohit played 120 IPL games and claimed 134 wickets at an average of 26.21 featuring one five-wicket haul and three four-fers.
Mohit's international career
Mohit has represented India in 26 ODIs and eight T20Is. He has claimed 31 wickets from 26 ODIs averaging 32.90 including a solitary four-fer. In eight T20Is he played, he bagged six scalps at an average of 30.83. He made his ODI debut in 2013. He made his last appearance in ODI and T20Is in October 2015.
