When Prashant Veer joined Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as a marquee signing for Rs 14.20 crore, the initial guidance he received from MS Dhoni deviated from typical cricketing strategy. Rather than focusing on technical skills like field placements or the art of finishing a match, the legendary captain came up with a heart-winning advice for the youngster.
He told me to save my money and not spend it unnecessarily: Dhoni's advice for Prashant Veer
Prashant later shared that Dhoni’s counsel was surprisingly practical and grounded. By prioritising a conversation about managing wealth and the responsibilities that come with a high-value contract, the veteran leader aimed to ensure his new teammate remained focused and stable off the field, allowing his performance on it to flourish without unnecessary distractions.
“Right now, we haven’t spoken much about cricket. He told me to save my money and not spend it unnecessarily,” Prashant said, as quoted by The Hindu.

The 20-year-old all-rounder has maintained a very clear perspective regarding his specific responsibilities with the bat. Despite the high expectations that often accompany a major signing, he remains focused on executing his designated role within the team's tactical framework. This clarity of purpose has allowed him to approach his training with a disciplined mindset as he prepares for the competitive demands of the upcoming season.
During his initial days in the team camp, Prashant has prioritised observation and adaptation. He has spent his time soaking in the professional environment and actively seeking knowledge from the experienced players and coaching staff around him.
“I can bat in any situation. Just as long as I don’t have to open, I will do it anywhere else. The environment is very good, and everyone is very supportive. It feels good to mingle with them and play together. It’s a great feeling for me, my family, and my village (Sahajipur, UP). I’m really blessed to be here. It’s my first IPL, so I have never had practice sessions like this before. The environment and the intensity here are different, so it takes a little time to get used to it,” he added.
Dhoni told me to think at the last moment what the batter is expecting: Kartik Sharma
Meanwhile, 19-year-old wicketkeeper-batter Kartik Sharma has highlighted that his primary objective is to learn the art of finishing and tactical game management from MS Dhoni. Like many of his teammates, Kartik noted that he has been particularly impressed by the high intensity and world-class facilities provided at the Chennai Super Kings training camp as the team prepares for the new season. Regarding the specific guidance he has received from the legendary captain, Kartik mentioned that Dhoni often emphasises the importance of psychological awareness. According to the young player, much of Dhoni’s advice centers on the ability to anticipate a batter’s next move and read their mind during critical moments of the game.
“I want to learn how to finish games and good game planning. The training setup was very good. I haven’t had such practice before this — great ground (CSK High Performance Centre) and very good wickets.”
On Dhoni's advice, Kartik said:
“He said if you have a good slower ball or yorker, you have to build on that strength. And to think at the last moment what the batter is expecting and bowl accordingly.”
