Robin Uthappa said that SRH are not a serious title contender in IPL 2026

Uthappa feels just aggressive batting won't help SRH win IPL trophy

Former India's star batter Robin Uthappa has expressed skepticism on Sunrisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) chances of winning the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Despite the team boasting one of the most aggressive and explosive batting lineups in the league, Uthappa stated that he does not view them as a 'serious title contender', suggesting that their heavy-hitting approach might not be enough to go all the way.

Just aggressive batting won't help SRH win IPL trophy: Robin Uthappa

While appearing on JioHotstar, Uthappa elaborated on his stance, highlighting the potential flaws in SRH's high-octane strategy. He argued that while an ultra-aggressive batting style can dominate individual games, it may lack the consistency and balance required to navigate the high-pressure environment of the playoffs and ultimately lift the IPL trophy.

"SRH's aggressive batting is entertaining to watch. But batting like that won't help them win the IPL. Their bowling is a bit on the weaker side. Bowlers are the ones who make you win the trophy," Uthappa said.

SRH’s bowling department for the IPL 2026 season features a mix of experienced campaigners and emerging talent. The pace attack is led by Harshal Patel and Jaydev Unadkat, supported by Shivam Mavi, Eshan Malinga, and the developing all-round skills of Nitish Kumar Reddy. In the spin department, the team will look to Harsh Dubey and Zeeshan Ansari to provide the necessary breakthroughs and control in the middle overs.

However, India's 2007 World Cup-winner has raised concerns regarding the depth and effectiveness of this unit, particularly given the nature of the home conditions. He noted that the 'flat wickets' at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad offer little assistance to bowlers, making it easy for batters to dominate.

"In Hyderabad, where they play seven matches, the pitch is a batting paradise. It is a super belter wicket. Even someone like Mohammed Shami could not be penetrative on those flat wickets. You need a bowler like Bhuvneshwar Kumar. He is a very clever guy. He swings the ball, changes pace, bowls yorkers. At the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, you don't want to put too much pace on the ball because the ball does not seam around much. I don't think SRH have the bowling unit right now that can back the instability their aggressive batting can cause if the top order does not fire," Uthappa added.

Ishan Kishan to lead SRH in Pat Cummins' absence

SRH have faced a major setback just as the new season approaches, with captain Pat Cummins confirmed to miss the opening slate of matches due to injury. In his absence, the franchise has turned to Ishan Kishan to step into the leadership role.

Adding to the team's challenges, Uthappa has pointed out a historical vulnerability in the SRH setup. He stated that the bowling unit has frequently struggled to defend targets whenever the batting lineup fails to post an exceptionally high total. This lack of "defensive" reliability puts immense pressure on the hitters to perform perfectly every game, as the bowlers have often found it difficult to contain opposition lineups on their own merit.

"We saw what happened last season. Apart from Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head and Heinrich Klaasen, no other batter was able to step up. When the top order failed, the bowlers were not able to defend the totals. So I won't consider SRH as a serious title contender this season," Uthappa signed off.
