Mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy's bowling wizardry was on full display during the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) versus Rajasthan Royals (RR) IPL 2026 clash at the Eden Gardens stadium on April 19. Chakaravarthy made a spectacular return to KKR playing XI and made an immediate impact by claiming the crucial wicket of the dangerous-looking Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in his very first over. He didn't just grabbed the key wicket but also scripted history by becoming the fastest Indian spinner to reach the 200-wicket milestone in T20 cricket and the second-fastest among all Indian bowlers.
Chakravarthy bowled a full-pitched ball with enough air to lure the 15-year-old batting prodigy into a heavy slog toward the leg side. Misjudging the trajectory, the young batter miscued the shot, sending the ball high into the air. Ramandeep Singh showed great composure in the deep mid-wicket region, tracking the ball to complete a sensational catch.
Chakaravarthy’s dominance did not stop at that opening wicket; he went on to deliver an astonishing spell, finishing with figures of 3 for 14. In addition to Sooryavanshi, he effectively dismantled the Rajasthan Royals' batting lineup by accounting for the wickets of key players Riyan Parag and Yashasvi Jaiswal, cementing his role as the architect of his team's bowling performance.
With this feat, Chakaravarthy has firmly etched his name among the elite Indian bowlers. While he sits behind only Arshdeep Singh—who reached the 200-wicket mark in 151 innings—Chakravarthy surpassed his teammate Kuldeep Yadav (160 innings) by reaching the milestone five innings faster. The top five list of fastest Indian bowlers to this mark is rounded out by Jaydev Unadkat and Mohammed Shami. Beyond this landmark, the mystery spinner’s journey remains impressive; having started his IPL career with the Punjab Kings in 2019, he has since become a cornerstone of the Kolkata Knight Riders while also serving as the captain of the Tamil Nadu state team in the shortest format of the game.
Chakaravarthy ended up notching a brilliant spell of 3/14 to help KKR restrict RR to 155/9.
