Punjab Kings pulled off a brilliant run chase to defeat Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk, chasing down a big target of 210 runs with confidence. After finishing as runners-up last season, Punjab look in great touch this year. This win was their second in a row, and it helped them move to the top of the points table with four points.
Mhatre’s Brilliant Knock Powers CSK to 209
Earlier in the match, young batter Ayush Mhatre played a superb innings, scoring 73 off 43 balls to guide Chennai to a strong total of 209 for five.
He shared an important 96-run partnership with captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, who made 28 runs.
CSK had a shaky start as Sanju Samson got out early. He tried an aggressive shot against Xavier Bartlett but only managed to edge it behind.
Mhatre Takes Charge with Aggressive Batting
After that early wicket, Mhatre took control of the innings. He attacked the bowlers from the start, hitting boundaries with ease.
He took on Xavier Bartlett in the Powerplay, smashing three fours in a row. He also handled the short ball well and even hit Marco Jansen for a six.
Mhatre reached his fifty in just 29 balls and continued to dominate, hitting Marcus Stoinis for back-to-back sixes.
However, he had some luck along the way, getting dropped twice before finally being dismissed.
Middle Overs Slow CSK Down
Yuzvendra Chahal played a key role in slowing down Chennai in the middle overs. He dismissed both Mhatre and Gaikwad, which reduced CSK’s momentum.
Between the 10th and 15th overs, Chennai managed only 45 runs, which hurt their chances of posting an even bigger total.
Late Cameos Push CSK Past 200
In the final overs, CSK tried to accelerate again. Sarfaraz Khan played a quick knock of 32 off just 12 balls, hitting multiple boundaries with clever shots.
Shivam Dube also contributed with 45 off 27 balls. Their efforts helped Chennai add 64 runs in the last five overs and cross the 200-run mark.
Shreyas Leads, Finishers Seal the Chase
In reply, Punjab started confidently, with captain Shreyas Iyer scoring a solid 50 to set up the chase.
Towards the end, Shashank Singh and Marcus Stoinis finished the job calmly, making the big target look much easier than expected.
Chennai’s bowlers struggled to defend the total, and Punjab completed the chase comfortably to secure a memorable win.
