Ishan Kishan has been appointed SRH's stand-in captain in absence of Pat Cummins

Ishan Kishan will thus became the youngest-ever captain to lead SRH in IPL on March 28

Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season kicks off with a historic shift for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) as Ishan Kishan prepares to make his captaincy debut against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), March 28. Kishan steps into the role to fill the void left by regular skipper Pat Cummins, who remains sidelined with a lingering back injury.

Ishan Kishan to create massive record in IPL 2026 opener

Cummins’ absence follows a difficult stretch where he missed the 2026 T20 World Cup and the bulk of the 2025-26 Ashes; consequently, he isn’t expected to rejoin the Orange Army until the second half of the tournament. Kishan is slated to lead the squad for at least seven matches, supported by Abhishek Sharma, who will serve as vice-captain during this transition.

Ishan Kishan to become youngest captain to captain SRH in IPL

Beyond the immediate tactical change, Kishan’s appointment marks a significant milestone in the franchise's history. By taking the toss against RCB, he will officially become the youngest Indian ever to captain SRH. While the overall record for the youngest SRH captain still belongs to Kane Williamson, who debuted in the role at 27 years and 244 days in 2018, Kishan’s new leadership role signals a youthful evolution for the team. Once Cummins returns to full fitness later this season, Kishan is expected to transition into the vice-captaincy role.

This leadership shift mirrors the franchise's history of navigating captaincy transitions. In 2018, Kane Williamson was famously handed the reins after David Warner was barred from the season; Williamson successfully led the team to the final, losing narrowly to Chennai Super Kings. Even after Warner’s return in 2019, he played under Williamson’s leadership for a full year before being reinstated as captain for the 2020 campaign. With Ishan Kishan stepping in now, he joins an exclusive club of Indian players to have captained the Sunrisers, alongside Shikhar Dhawan, Manish Pandey, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. At 27 years and 253 days old, Kishan’s appointment is a calculated bet by a franchise that invested Rs11.25 crore in him during the 2025 mega-auction and retained him despite a challenging debut season in orange.
