Ishan Kishan ran riot with his explosive batting during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025 match, smashing an unbeaten 77 runs off just 23 balls against Arunachal Pradesh at the Wankhede Stadium, which is his former IPL team Mumbai Indians home ground. Ishan Kishan's lightning knock came after he was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL 2025 auction, which ended his seven-year-long stint with MI.
Ishan Kishan creates history with explosive 77 runs off 23 balls
While Kishan scripted history after his knock, his team Jharkhand went on to notch a World Record.
Arunachal Pradesh were bundled out for a lowly 93 runs after opting to bat first. No Arunachal Pradesh batter could manage to score more than 14 runs. Anukul Roy, recently acquired by Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2025 auction, was the star performer for Jharkhand, claiming four wickets. Ravi Yadav also contributed with three wickets.
In response, Jharkhand chased down the target in a mere 27 balls. Ishan Kishan stole the show with a lightning knock of 77 runs off just 23 balls, with a mind boggling strike rate of 334.78. Notably, this innings is the quickest by any player in the history of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, surpassing Anmolpreet Singh's previous record. It is also the second-fastest T20 innings by an Indian cricketer, behind only Suresh Raina's 25-ball 87 in the 2014 IPL.
Jharkhand made history by chasing down their target of 94 runs in just 4.3 overs, securing a 10-wicket victory. In doing so, they achieved the highest run rate ever in a T20I inning, i.e 20.88 lasting more than one over, surpassing Romania's previous record of 20.47, set in 2021 against Serbia.
Meanwhile, after getting released by MI before the IPL 2025 mega auction, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) acquired the services of the star southpaw for Rs 11.25 crore in a fierce bidding war during the auction. Kishan's former team, initially showed interest but eventually bowed out at Rs 3.40 crore. Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings also joined the bidding, but it was SRH who had the last laugh. MI chose not to exercise their Right to Match (RTM) card, allowing Kishan to move to a new team.
