RCB players to sport black armbands in IPL 2026 opener

The players are set to wear black armbands to honor the memory of the 11 fans who tragically lost their lives in a stampede outside the venue last year. The incident occurred amidst the massive celebrations following the franchise's historic title win, leaving a deep impact on the local community and the cricketing world.

"Royal Challengers Bengaluru will pay tribute to the eleven members of the RCB family who tragically lost their lives in the unfortunate incident on June 4. As a mark of respect, players will wear practice jerseys bearing the number 11 during the warm-up, followed by black armbands during the match," RCB said in a statement.

"In a lasting gesture of remembrance, eleven seats at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium will remain unoccupied, serving as a permanent tribute to the fans whose unwavering support will always be a part of the RCB family," the statement added.

The tragedy resulted in a period of extended closure for the stadium, as several others were injured and the venue was subsequently declared unfit for high-profile matches. This suspension had big ramifications, leading to the relocation of Women's ODI World Cup fixtures and the exclusion of the ground from the 2027 T20 World Cup hosting plans.

The return of cricket to the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium was formalised in February after the Karnataka cabinet approved the venue for IPL matches, following a comprehensive review by a government-appointed expert committee. By March, Home Minister G. Parmeshwara granted the Karnataka State Cricket Association final permission to host the 2026 season, including the high-stakes playoff and final fixtures. This clearance followed the successful completion of "Phase 1" safety and infrastructure upgrades, which were developed in coordination with the police, Public Works Department, fire force, and medical authorities.

These infrastructure improvements focused heavily on crowd management and emergency response. Key measures included the widening of existing gates, the creation of new entry points along Cubbon Road and Link Road, and the establishment of dedicated holding areas to prevent congestion outside the turnstiles. After a final inspection by the expert committee, led by Maheshwar Rao of the Greater Bengaluru Authority, the venue was cleared to host its full capacity of 33,000 fans, signaling a full return to operational strength. For the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, IPL 2026 opener against SRH carries a profound emotional weight that transcends the sport. To honor the 11 fans who lost their lives in last year's tragedy, the team has integrated several tributes into the matchday experience. Players will wear special warm-up jerseys featuring the number 11, followed by black armbands during the game. Furthermore, 11 seats within the stadium will remain permanently vacant as a lasting memorial to the supporters who lost their lives during the stampede.
